Initial Observations: October 1, 2014
There are five mealworms in our collection. They range in size from 2.8 to 3 cm. They are a golden toffee colour and are segmented with dark brown rings. The mealworms have a hard exoskeleton. There are 6 little legs at the front of each mealworm but none at the back; the legs are sticky allowing them to climb. The mealworms also have undeveloped eyes and antennas. They are sensitive to light and do not like sound. The mealworms are good at burrowing in the bran flakes. While the mealworms have the ability to move in both directs, they usually move forward. When we introduced various sources of food, we initially found that they were drawn to the apple but avoided the carrot and pear. We think that the mealworms breathe through the top of their heads, but more research is needed to confirm this theory. All of the mealworms tried to escape and seemed to be working together to do so. They are really good at playing dead.
Further Questions
-Is there a sex? How do you know?
-How do they reproduce?
-How do they eat?
-Do they sleep?
-How long do they live?
-Where do they come from?
-How big do they get?
-Are they related to maggots? Are they worms?
-What are the stages of development?
