Experiment 7: Climbing Skills
Hypothesis: We hypothesized that it would be easier for the mealworms to climb up the cardboard than to climb up the MIRA because the MIRA is smoother and harder to grip.
Materials:
-Piece of cardboard
-MIRA
Procedures:
1. Place mealworm at the bottom of a tilted piece of cardboard and observe behaviour.
2. Place mealworm at the bottom of a tiled MIRA and observe behaviour.
3. Repeat with other mealworms.
Observations:
Mealworm 1:
-Able to climb up the cardboard.
-Slid off of the MIRA.
Mealworm 2:
-Able to climb up the cardboard.
-Slid off of the MIRA.
Mealworm 3:
-Able to climb up the cardboard.
-Slid off of the MIRA, even with assistance.
Conclusions: The mealworms were able to climb up the cardboard easily but were not able to climb up the MIRA. Although they have special feet that allow them to climb many things with ease, the smooth plastic of the MIRA proved too difficult.
Independent Variables: Placement of the cardboard and MIRA, materials used.
Dependent Variables: Behaviour of the mealworms.
