Experiment 4: Carrots or Parsnips?
Hypothesis: We hypothesized that the mealworms would prefer the parsnip because it is sweeter.
Materials:
-Small piece of carrot
-Small piece of parsnip
Procedures:
1. Place equal size pieces of carrot and parsnip in the middle of the shoebox.
2. Put the lid on the shoebox and check back 5 minutes later, 20 minutes later, and several hours later.
Observations:
5 minutes later:
-The mealworms were not eating either the carrot or the parsnip.
20 minutes later:
-Three of the mealworms were eating the carrot.
Several hours later:
-The carrot had been completely eaten and some of the parsnip had been eaten.
Conclusions: The mealworms preferred carrots to parsnips but will eat parsnips if the carrots are gone.
Independent Variables: Size of the vegetables, placement of the vegetables, observation time.
Dependent Variables: Behaviour of the mealworms.
