Experiment 1: Mealworm Music Preferences
Hypothesis: We hypothesized that the mealworms would prefer (react more to) rap music over classical music because of the stronger beat.
Materials:
-Robert Schumann music (from cellphone)
-"Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj (from cellphone)
Procedures:
1. We removed three mealworms from the shoebox and placed them on the table.
2. We played one minute of each song with the cellphone placed close to the mealworms and observed them.
Observations:
Round 1:
First song: Robert Schumann
-We played the song for 1 minute.
-One meal worm was wiggling a little bit, the other two were playing dead.
Second song: "Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj
-We played the song for 1 minute.
-All three mealworms moved some during this song but were still mostly playing dead.
Round 2: We tried this experiment again with our new mealworms after our old ones started to pupate.
First song: Robert Schumann
-We played the song for 1 minute.
-The mealworms were very active and moved the entire time. One of the mealworms was determined
to get inside the phone.
Second song: "Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj
-We played the song for 1 minute.
-One of the mealworms wanted to get back inside the shoebox. The same mealworm wanted to get
inside the phone again.
Conclusions: The mealworms react more strongly to rap music than to classical music. The younger mealworms reacted more strongly to both classical music and rap music.
Independent Variables: Type of music, length of time music was played, where the cellphone (speaker) was placed, where the mealworms were placed in relation to the music
Dependent Variables: Reaction of the mealworms to the music
